PERTH, Australia (AP) – A ship searching for the missing Malaysian jet has detected two more underwater signals, raising hopes the wreckage of the plane will be spotted soon, the Australian official in charge of the search said Wednesday.

Angus Houston, the head of a joint agency coordinating the search for the missing plane in the southern Indian Ocean, said that the Australian navy’s Ocean Shield picked up the two signals in a sweep on Tuesday.

“I think we are looking in the right area but I am not prepared to confirm anything until such time someone lays eyes on the wreckage,” he said.

The Ocean Shield first detected the sounds late Saturday and early Sunday before losing them, but managed to find them again on Tuesday, Houston said. The ship is equipped with a U.S. Navy towed pinger locator that is designed to pick up signals from a plane’s black boxes – the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder.

“Hopefully in a matter of days, we will be able to find something on the bottom that might confirm that this is the last resting place of MH370,” Houston said at a news conference in Perth, the starting point for the search in the southern Indian Ocean.

“I’m now optimistic that we will find the aircraft, or what is left of the aircraft, in the not too distant future – but we haven’t found it yet, because this is a very challenging business,” he said.

“And I would just like to have that hard evidence … photograph evidence (before saying). that this is the final resting place of MH370,” Houston said.

Finding the sound again is crucial to narrowing the search area so a small submarine can be deployed to chart a potential debris field on the seafloor, which is about 4,500 meters (14,800 feet) deep. If the autonomous sub was used now with the sparse data collected so far, covering all the potential places from which the pings might have come would take many days.

“The better Ocean Shield can define the area, the easier it will be for the autonomous underwater vehicle to subsequently search for aircraft wreckage,” Houston said.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 carrying 239 people went missing March 8 on a trip from Kuala Lumpur, setting off one of aviation’s biggest mysteries. The search has shifted from waters off of Vietnam, to the Strait of Malacca and then finally to waters in the southern Indian Ocean as data from radar and satellites was further analyzed.

The locator beacons on the black boxes have a battery life of only about a month – and Tuesday marked exactly one month since the plane vanished. Once the beacons blink off, locating the black boxes in such deep water would be an immensely difficult, if not impossible, task.

After many reports, it has taken weeks to pinpoint a specific area where planes and ships are now scouring. That area is the southern Indian Ocean, where the airliner is believed to have crashed. The focus of the search is a 221,000 sq km (85,000 sq mile) area 1,500km (932 miles) west of Perth, Australia.
With less than 48 hours remaining as the unofficial time that the black box batteries stop emitting its’ strong pinging signal, the rush is on to locate the downed plane.
A number of countries from around the world have come together to locate the Malaysian Airlines plane that disappeared on March 8 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Flight MH370 was carrying 239 people.
As of late, news has surfaced that three independent sources have heard transitory sounds in the search area that are consistent with those produced by a black box. These sounds have caused new optimism for the families and people around the world who have been on pins and needles since the initial disappearance.

The head of the multinational search being conducted off Australia’s west coast confirmed that a Chinese ship had picked up electronic pulsing signals twice in a small patch of the search zone, once on Friday and again on Saturday.

On Sunday, an Australian ship carrying sophisticated deep-sea sound equipment picked up a third signal in a different part of the massive search area.

“This is an important and encouraging lead, but one which I urge you to treat carefully,” retired Australian Air Chief Marshall Angus Houston, who is coordinating the search, told reporters in Perth.”

They’re still in search of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and seems no closer to finding it than when they started. Yesterday they followed a lead about debris in the water that again did not pan out. But… that is not what this post is about. I want you to check this out.

How can an airplane disappear into thin air? That is the question that is on a lot of people’s minds as the search continues for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Is there another Bermuda Triangle? It has now been six days since the flight carrying 239 people went missing approximately and hour after departure. A few of the facts that are known about the missing airplane are listed below:

1. The flight took off from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing early on Saturday, March 8,2014 It was due to land in Beijing, China at 11:30 PM on the same day.
2. The flight was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members.
3. There has not been any contact with the plane after a little over an hour after takeoff.
4. Two of the passengers listed on the flight manifest, (one from Italy and one from Austria) were reported as missing but they were not on the plane. They indicated that their passports had been stolen.
5. Reports surfaced that the flight may have turned back before going missing.
6. More than 40 planes and ships from at least 10 nations have been searching the area for the missing plane.
7. There have been no signs that an explosion in the air occurred.
8. No one has claimed responsibility for this tragedy and investigators are saying that terrorism is unlikely.
9. Investigators are looking into the mental or personal status of the crew.
10. The search area has been expanded from India to China.
