I don’t know how I ended up watching this clip but as soon as I did, I could not look away. If you don’t want to cry, don’t watch this one. This is a story about ABUSE, SURVIVAL, HEROISM, and STRENGTH . I don’t want to give away too much in this writing because I want you to watch the clip. I’ve never been in an abusive situation and certainly not a situation such as this but it really hurt nonetheless. The kids in this story are extremely resilient yet what they’ve gone through will always be with them. THE OPRAH SHOW has evolved over the years but she has always been educational, cutting-edge, poignant, and emotional. Watch this clip and let me know what you think.
This morning’s sermon was about wisdom. The pastor spoke about seeking wisdom. I found this quote about wisdom online. It is by Oprah. This is what I call deep………..REAL DEEP…….and yet, it is quite simple.
“From every wound
There is a scar,
And every scar
Tells a story
A story that says
“I have survived”
Do you remember the name Rachael Dolezal? She is the woman who was president of the Seattle, Washington NAACP. She garnered national attention when her biological parents told the world that she was white and not black as she had been pretending.
Let us fast forward to recent news and Shaun King. King has been a very noticeable face of the Black Lives Matter development since the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. King has been accused of not being black as he has claimed. After this information made the news, CNN’s Don Lemon reported that a “family member” had given information that King’s parents are both white. Is this déjà vu? Shaun King as a baby (on the right)
The report mentioned a birth certificate obtained from the Kentucky Office of Vital Statistics that lists King’s father as Jeffery Wayne King, who is also white. King has fired back at these accusations by saying that he is in fact biracial. He has also defended his Oprah Scholarship to attend Morehouse College, a historically black school. He indicates that he did not lie about his race to obtain the scholarship.
Shaun King as a sophomore in high school
King recently addressed this entire situation by issuing the following statement:
I refuse to speak in detail about the nature of my mother’s past, or her sexual partners, and I am gravely embarrassed to even be saying this now, but I have been told for most of my life that the white man on my birth certificate is not my biological father and that my actual biological father is a light-skinned black man. My mother and I have discussed her affair. She was a young woman in a bad relationship and I have no judgment. This has been my lived reality for nearly 30 of my 35 years on earth. I am not ashamed of it, or of who I am—never that—but I was advised by my pastor nearly 20 years ago that this was not a mess of my doing and it was not my responsibility to fix it. All of my siblings and I have different parents. I’m actually not even sure how many siblings I have.
What do you think about this interesting story? Why does race matter so much? Is race the issue here? When will all of this madness stop?
When I saw this clip, I definitely wanted to share it with you. This ought to be a great series presented by OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). It talks about the one thing that we hear or face every single day of our lives; belief. When we talk about the word BELIEF, certainly GOD is the first thing that comes to mind. There are some that claim that they do not believe in GOD but I find that hard to BELIEVE. Check out this example:
I once worked with a gentleman who heard that I was a BELIEVER. this gentleman approached me one day and told me that he did not BELIEVE in all of this fairy tale nonsense that was in the bible. He said that he could in fact do exactly what he wanted to do. He said that he could get out in the street and kill 20 people if he so desired. I told him that he could only do this if GOD allowed it to happen. He said that it had nothing to do with GOD. I personally choose not to argue with fools and I ended the conversation.
Two years later, I pulled in the parking at work and before I could get out of my car, the same man approached me. This time, he told me that his young daughter had been hospitalized and that things were not looking good for her. He said, “when you go down on your knees tonight, send one up for me.” I asked him, “who do you want me to send it up to?” He looked confused and I reminded him that he did not BELIEVE in
GOD and of course he again asked me to pray for his daughter. I think that people are convenient believers.
Back to the series called ‘BELIEF’ that Oprah is having on her network in October. It really ought to be good. Let me know what you think.
Tonight… it’s going down on Iyanla’s “Fix My Life”. Iyanyla sits down with Chris Brown’s on and off again girlfriend KARREUCHE TRAN for a no holds barred interview. You can watch excerpts from tonight’s show below. This stuff that we see in the news is so far-fetched sometimes that there is no way you can make this stuff up.I will probably be watching college basketball when this is on but trust me… the DVR will be running. Yep, I’ve told you before: I have this thing for reality TV. If you have Oprah’s OWN, check your local listing to see what time it will be on in your area.
Just in case you haven’t been watching Tyler Perry’s “The Haves and Have Nots” on OWN, let me tell you… YOU have been missing it. This season, like the rest is sure to keep you on the edge of your seats from week to week. I’m usually a reality tv person but between “The Haves and Have Nots” and Fox’s “Empire”, I’m slowly getting back into sitcoms. If you like good tv suspense and drama, I would encourage you to check out both of these shows. Here’s a sneak peak of what went down last week on “The Haves and Have Nots”.
I got this email yesterday from Tyler Perry and I wanted to share it. Of course it is about one of my favorite shows on TV, “The Haves and Have Nots”. I can’t wait. If you haven’t been watching, now is a good time to catch up before the new season starts. Reruns are being shown on OWN.
Let me be the first to say, when the new episodes of The Haves And The Have Nots start on January 6th you’re going to be blown away!!!!!
If you don’t believe me WATCH THIS!!!!!!
I got this email today from Tyler Perry. Hopefully you’ll check Cicely Tyson out this weekend on OWN.
A few years ago I was flying to Africa. I invited Ms. Cicely Tyson and Mr. Poitier to fly with me. I literally sat at their feet on the plane listening to them speak about their lives. I knew I was in the presence of two very amazing souls. I knew I was listening to living history.
Well, this Sunday you get to sit and see some of what I witnessed. Ms. Cicely Tyson, truly a master teaching a Master Class. Sunday at 10/9c, only on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
Check this out if you haven’t seen it yet. Oprah graces the June cover of O Magazine showing off her curves at 60 years of age.
“Call me crazy, but I’ve never really understood our culture’s fear of getting older,” Oprah said. “The way I see it, every year can be a brand new journey. Think about it: You get one chance to be 25 … 38 … 44 … 61 … and every age before and between. Why wouldn’t you want to experience all the wonder in each step on your path?”
The media mogul comments that she feels blessed to be 60.
“One day I literally woke up and thought, ‘My God, these knees have been with me for 60 years. Wow! I’ve had these elbows for 60 years. My heart has been beating for 60 years. The feet I stand on have carried me for 60 years.’ And when you think about it that way, you can be nothing but grateful,” she said.
